Чайка" ГАЗ-14

In 1977 the Soviet Union Carmaker GAZ introduced their flagship car the Chaika.

The car was mainly used by local governors, an ordinary Soviet citizen couldn't purchase a Chaika - it was never in open sale. This was a luxury car for middle-level officials. But in some cases, it found its way up to the top, as it did in Cuba where it was used by Fidel Castro.

The Chaika weighed around 2600 kilograms, with a beating 5.5 liter heart pushing 220hp, allowing it to go as fast as 175km/h.

At the end of 1980s the Soviet authorities decided that they couldn't justify keeping such an elite car as the Chaika in production any longer. Their idea was to show that the Soviet political elite would no longer enjoy luxury items, but would become closer to the common people. Manufacture ended as part of the Perestroika.

President Gorbachev not only ordered GAZ to cease production of the Chaika, but also told it to destroy all the blueprints and technology used to produce the limousine. As a result, the idea to restore production of the Chaika in the 1990s completely failed.

A total of 1,114 had been built.
